Sarah Klassen is a Winnipeg poet and fiction writer. Her most recent publication is The Russian Daughter (2022), her second novel. Her first, The Wittenbergs (2013), received the Margaret McWilliams Award. Klassen's eighth, and last poetry collection is The Tree of Life. Her first, Journey to Yalta (1988) received the Gerald Lampert Memorial Award. A Curious Beatitude, (2006) was awarded the Canadian Authors Association Award for Poetry. Her poetry has also received two National Magazine Awards, gold and silver. After retiring from a career of teaching high school English, Klassen taught English language and literature at LCC University in Lithuania and English language at a summer institute in Kharkiv. She has been part of Manitoba's literary community, serving on boards such as the Manitoba Writers Guild and Prairie Fire Magazine. She has also taught workshops, including two summer writing schools at CMU. She enjoys gardening.

My farmer father subscribed to the Weekly Free Press Prairie Farmer. When it arrived in the mail, I extracted the comics and hid them under my mattress. My parent thought comics weren’t necessary reading material.

I’m definitely a clutter desk person. Clippings, lists, magazines, pencils, bulldtins and sometimes even the coffee spill onto the floor.
What keeps me awake at night? My ecological nightmare has all of us buried under the waste and garbage we produce so in such great quantities and with so little thought. To this I contribute.
I would have liked to master the skills of swimming and singing.
